History of the North Pocono Public Library

At the North Pocono Public Library

The North Pocono Public Library came into existence on April 8, 1985.  In the years prior to its opening, various organizations tried to form a library in the North Pocono area but it was a task that was difficult to launch.  Among the requirements set forth by the state in order to meet the required specifications was the need to post a sizeable amount of money in order to get started.

Anne Smith and Bill Stephens, business people who recognized the community's need, acted as co-charimen in the drive for funds.  Harry Smith, Bill Stephens and the Penn Security Bank started the fund in motion with contributions of $1,000 each.  With the assistance of the North Pocono Business and Professional Organization, and several dedicated citizens the fund grew, late in 1984, to $30,000, a figure which would allow the library to become a reality.

The library was accepted into the Lackawanna County Library System in October, 1985.

The buillding which currently houses the library on Van Brunt Street was owned by Paul DeMuth and Bill Lugg who had it put up for sale.  These men later offered the building rent free until the library could establish itself.  The library was purchased from Paul DeMuth and Bill Lugg in 1986.

The library moved into a new building at 1315 Church Street and opened on June 17, 2013.
