Local History and Genealogy
The Alice Ahern Lynady Room, located on the second floor, houses the Library’s local history and genealogy collection. The collection serves those interested in genealogy research of the Carbondale area and in researching some of the history the greater Carbondale area and Lackawanna Valley. The onsite collection consists of local newspapers on microfilm, books and videos pertaining to local history, and access to subscription, online genealogy resources.
The Collection
The Library’s collection consists of local newspapers dating back into the 1830s on microfilm, Carbondale City Directories dating from 1900 to 1991, Maplewood Cemetery Internment Records, photographic histories of Carbondale, books written on the region, videos about local history, and access to subscription websites such as Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest.
Our Research Request Policy
Requests for research can be made via phone, email, or post (Contact Information). When sending an email request please place “Genealogy Research” somewhere in the title. While our staff is willing to help as much as possible, we cannot do extensive family research or general subject research. When making a request, it is helpful if you could be as specific as possible and provide as much background information as you know or think would be useful in aiding us in our search. (For example, we can do a search for an obituary for “March 1969” but not for “sometime around 1970.”)
The Carbondale Public Library does not require any fee for our research services though donations are greatly appreciated.
